Why are mangroves important? In Florida, they do more than just line the coast—they protect it. 🌱🌊
Mangroves reduce wave height by up to 66%, absorb carbon 10x faster than rainforests, and help prevent coastal flooding during hurricanes.
Since the 1940s, Florida has lost 84% of its native mangroves—mostly to development. But the good news? Restoration efforts and state protections are helping bring them back.
During Hurricane Irma, mangroves helped protect over 500,000 people and prevented $1.5 billion in flood damage.
On International Mangrove Day, we’re celebrating these natural storm shields—and the people working to restore them.

@theodysseymovie hear us out: swap Polyphemus the Cyclops with a Polyphemus moth.
Sure, you’d need to tweak the story—it’s not exactly a man-eating giant. This moth doesn’t even have a mouth. It couldn’t eat anyone if it wanted to. Once it emerges from its cocoon, it only has a few days to live. Just enough time to vibe, lay eggs, and maybe trick someone into thinking it’s a leaf. But think about it: isn’t watching a moth wayyyyy cooler than watching a man-eating Cyclops?
Plus, you’d shine a light on how vital they are to our ecosystems. Nighttime pollinators, food for bats and birds, and champions of biodiversity! A moth might not crush ships or devour sailors, but those things don’t necessarily make a good story!!
Also…it’s Moth Week. Just saying. Maybe you should think about it 🫶

Fun fact: only 6 of the 44 snake species found in Florida are venomous.
Most snakes you see are just chill dudes / dudettes doing their thing. No need to be afraid! Just give them the space and respect they deserve 🐍 #WorldSnakeDay
How do you feel about snakes?

Big news for #DisabilityPrideMonth! 🌟
A fully accessible playground has just been unveiled, inspired by the sea turtles that nest along the park’s beaches! 🐢🛝
This incredible space is designed for EVERYONE, featuring wheelchair access, sensory-friendly elements, and ground-level activities.
“We hope this new playground sparks curiosity, joy, and a lifelong love for nature,” said Delores Barr Weaver, named the first-ever “Florida State Parks Foundation Accessibility Champion” in 2024 after pledging $500,000 over five years to improve accessibility in state parks.
A huge THANK YOU to the Florida State Parks Foundation, Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds, and St. Augustine Amphitheatre for making Florida’s wild spaces more inclusive for future generations! 🙌

If not snowbird season, why snowy bird?
Snowy egrets are the true Floridians—sticking around all year, no matter how hot it gets or how many snowbirds flee. They thrive in shallow estuarine hangouts like mangroves, bays, saltmarsh pools, and tidal channels.
