Setting Off on the Blueway

Day 1: Monday, June 23rd

Arriving at Koreshan State Park, 3800 Corkscrew Road, Estero, the anticipation for the adventure ahead was palpable. Checking in with my Timberline Glamping Fort Myers reservation, I settled into my cozy, rustic glamping tent. The excitement for the days to come was building. With its charming interior and modern amenities, the tent provided the perfect blend of comfort and rustic appeal. As I unpacked and arranged my belongings, I couldn’t help but marvel at the serene surroundings. The park, rich with history and natural beauty, was the perfect starting point for my adventure on the Blueway.

Encountering Wildlife

Day 2: Tuesday, June 24th

Our 7-mile paddling journey towards Mound Key Archaeological State Park was a journey of discovery. The area’s rich biodiversity quickly became evident as we glided through the calm waters. The sight of a pair of piliated woodpeckers was a unique encounter, and the gentle giant manatees, often called sea cows, moved slowly and gracefully, creating memorable encounters for paddlers.

The tranquility of the water, coupled with the surrounding lush greenery, made a picturesque scene straight out of a nature documentary. The air filled with bird calls, from the haunting heron to the cheerful songbirds. Birdwatchers will find paradise here, with over 300 species recorded. A striking sight was the barred owl perched on a tree branch, its large eyes watching intently as we paddled by. The diversity of avian life is astounding, and each turn in the waterway offers new surprises and sightings.

We stopped by the Estero River Outfitters at 20991 S. Tamiami Trail and connected with Justin, one of the owners of this fantastic establishment. Since 1977, Justin and his brothers outfit 100,000 people a year to paddle the Estero River. Justin shared insights about the high water levels and Fort Myers’ recovery after Hurricane Ian in 2022, adding a layer of local history and resilience to our conversation.

I reached Mound House, where we took a tour of the Calusa shell mound. Built from shells, animal bones, and other materials, these mounds served as foundations for their villages. Exploring it offered a glimpse into the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Calusa people. The towering and impressive mounds told stories of a bygone era where the Calusa Indians thrived in harmony with nature.

Afterward, we stopped at Flipper’s on the Bay and joined the rest of the Visit Ft. Myers team for a delightful lunch. The stunning waterfront provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing meal. We savored local delicacies such as fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and key lime pie, all of which perfectly complemented the serene view of the Bay. The local cuisine, paired with the serene view of the Bay, was a culinary delight that highlighted the day’s adventures.

A Day in the Life on the Blueway

Day 3: Wednesday, June 25th

The morning began with me presenting at the Heights Foundation. I shared some of the wonders of the Great Calusa Blueway and stressed the importance of conservation with the Summer Camp Youth. We all must play a part in preserving these natural wonders for future generations. The enthusiastic faces of the children and their curious questions reinforced the importance of environmental education and stewardship.

Later, at 11:30 AM, we met for lunch at Blue Dog Bar & Grill, 4597 Pine Island Road, Matlacha, FL 33993. The vibrant atmosphere of Blue Dog was perfect for refueling before our afternoon paddle if the weather permits. The decor, reflecting the local culture and history, added to the place’s charm, making it a favorite spot for locals and visitors.

After lunch, we decided that the weather didn’t permit a paddle, so we decided to drive to the Pineland and Randell Research Center, where we got a tour of some of the highest mounds still in existence, built by the Calusa Indians many years ago. The weather, while unpredictable, is part of the adventure, adding an element of surprise and adaptation to the journey. The tour at the research center provided more profound insights into the Calusa civilization, their sophisticated societal structures, and their connection to the environment.

Evening Retreat

After a day on the water, the evening retreat at Timberline Glamping Fort Myers offered comfort and relaxation. These sites blended rustic charm with modern amenities, providing a cozy end to the day. Each tent had comfortable beds, local snacks, and thoughtful touches. The ambiance of the glamping site, with its twinkling fairy lights and the sounds of nature, was a soothing end to an adventurous day.

Starting a campfire at Timberline Glamping Fort Myers is a simple yet profound pleasure. The site provides fire pits and firewood, and the staff is always available to assist if needed. We ensure that all fires are started and extinguished safely, and we encourage responsible fire use to minimize the environmental impact. It was a time to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature. The crackling fire, the cool breeze, and the clear, starlit sky created a perfect setting for reflection and relaxation.
